Following the initial objectives defined in its conception, the AdaptaBrasil MCTI platform gained a new Strategic Sector, Ports. Now, the solution starts to gather information that will allow exploratory analyzes and support decision-making based on current and projected climate risks in each of the 21 Brazilian ports considered. The new functionality was launched on the morning of 5/24 by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovations (MCTI), through the Secretariat for Research and Scientific Training (SEPEF), and is the result of a cooperation between RNP and the National Institute for Space Research (INPE), representing an offshoot of the study “Impacts and Risks of Climate Change in Brazilian Coastal Public Ports”, led by the National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ-MInfra), in partnership with the German Cooperation Agency (GIZ). “RNP is honored and happy to participate in AdaptaBrasil. It has already been a two-year journey that has been very well accomplished and that is achieving the initial objectives that SEPEF and Inpe, together with RNP, envisioned for this platform. It needed to be agile, open, secure and account for scientific evidence in different domains and we are seeing this come to fruition. I think we should all look at this with pride first. I would also like to congratulate ANTAQ and the Ministry of Infrastructure (MInfra) for this important delivery with an impact on the ports and understand that this is an instrument that will help many, not only us who are working in certain fields of social, scientific and economic development of the country. But also to managers, those who are in the territory and depend a lot on information that is based on evidence and that is simple, secure and available in time for a well-informed decision-making. So, all this is cause for celebration and RNP feels honored to be able to participate in this effort and have this delivery. We hope that AdaptaBrasil will also help us in other domains and systems”, said the director general of RNP, Nelson Simões, during the launching ceremony.

For the secretary of Research and Scientific Training at MCTI, Marcelo Morales, the inclusion of the Ports sector in the platform is yet another demonstration of the positive impact that science can have on the Brazilian population.

“In these opportunities, it is possible to see and recognize the importance of bringing science and public policies closer together. In other words, we have a practical and successful case where the best possible science available in an area of knowledge is applied to subsidize, guide actions within a strategic sector in the country. Climate change represents a challenge that is already present, with clear worsening trends in the future. The impacts that directly affect the population and environmental quality have been intensifying, in addition to economic losses affecting specific sectors or activities and increasingly impacting the regional, national or even global economy. This is the case of the port sector and other infrastructures that have critical functions in the context of domestic and international trade. If there is an interruption, loss of performance or increase in costs in maintaining critical infrastructure, for example, this affects the availability and price of products and services, influencing the competitiveness of economic sectors and the accessibility of the population to goods and services”. highlighted the secretary.

Also participating in the launch event were the undersecretary for sustainability of the Ministry of Infrastructure (MInfra), Larissa Amorim, the director general of the National Agency for Waterway Transport (ANTAQ), Eduardo Nery and the substitute coordinator for Earth Science at the National Institute of Space Research (INPE), Luiz Aragão.

About AdaptaBrasil MCTI
The AdaptaBrasil MCTI platform is the result of a partnership between RNP, SEPEF (Secretariat for Research and Scientific Training)/MCTI and INPE (National Institute for Space Research), with the objective of consolidating, integrating and disseminating information that enables the advance of the analysis of the impacts of climate change, observed and projected in the national territory, providing subsidies to the competent authorities for adaptation actions.

The first version, launched in October 2020, addressed the Strategic and Priority Sectors Water, Energy and Food, with the territorial scope limited to the semi-arid region. A year later, the platform was expanded to cover the entire national territory, maintaining the same strategic and priority sectors (Water, Energy and Food).

In March 2022, the Health Strategic Sector was made available, which included data to present indices and indicators that are influenced by climate change related to Malaria. Other pathogenic diseases will be included gradually.
