Agreement with Ministry will take broadband to schools and universities of Pernambuco
The Minister of Science, Technology, Innovation and Communications, Gilberto Kassab, signed on Wednesday (March 8), a cooperation agreement with the governor of Pernambuco, Paulo Câmara, to expand and develop the backbone (data transport network) of the Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (RNP) in the state. The project will bring high-speed internet to indoor educational institutions.
“It is essential for Brazil not only to recover its capacity for development, but to generate knowledge. There is no country in the world that can achieve the standards of excellence in the public service or the quality of services if it does not invest in educational institutions. Broadband, the internet, is critical to achieving these goals. It is a very important investment for the resumption of the country's development.”, said Kassab.
The expansion of the network will benefit researchers, teachers and students in several regions of Pernambuco. “This partnership will allow the expansion of the network to reach regions that today need communication and agility through the internet. The action will help a lot in the educational part, in science and technology and in the productive arrangements of the state”, said the governor Paulo Câmara.
“It is a strategic and structuring project of a future under which information and communication technologies are dominant”, says the secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation of Pernambuco, Lúcia de Melo.
High performance
Social organization linked to MCTIC, RNP is responsible for bringing high-speed fiber-optic internet to educational institutions and research centers. In some places in the Northeast, including Pernambuco, the cooperation agreement provides for the supply of 100 gigabytes per second, which represents a thousand times the maximum speed of the mobile network (4G).
“Currently, RNP is implementing the new generation of the backbone from the Northeast at a rate of 100 gigabytes per second. Part of this infrastructure to be used in the backbone will also be used in interiorization to connect large poles in the interior of Pernambuco. This year, some inland cities and state institutions will already benefit. The idea is to cover all major municipalities. The project in the state contemplates from the schools of basic education to research institutions and universities”, said Nelson Simões, general director of RNP.
