Datacenter in the Amazon will store project data between Brazil and Japan
The Brazilian National Research and Educational Network (RNP) has partnered with the Amazon National Institute of Research (INPA, in Portuguese) to store scientific data collected by the project Forest Museum, a bilateral initiative between Brazil and Kyoto University, at Japan. With funding provided by Japan International Cooperation Agency (Jica-Brazil), the project is dedicated, but not limited to, monitor the ecosystem data for Amazon biodiversity studies.
The great volume of information generated will be stored at the Sharing Data Center (CDC, in Portuguese), in the capital of the State of Amazonas, Manaus, with an average demand of 1 terabyte per month. In exchange for that, the institute will afford the Datacenter electricity consumption, managed by RNP.
One of the projects will have its data stored at CDC is the Acoustic phenology and soundscape diversity in lower Rio Negro, to record subaquatic sounds, analyze and monitor this ecosystem. The shoals migration, boats displacement boats and other biological and human events, are some of the water phenomena registered.
According to deputy coordinator of Strategic Measures of INPA, Laurindo Campos, this information shall be used as a great databank for researchers in Brazil and abroad. “The partnership with RNP is essential, since the use of this infrastructure will allow that foreign researchers have access to scientific data stored in Brazil. Thus, we are attracting several other projects that will be mandatorily analyzed by the data government of CDC”, said INPA’s manager.
