eduroam hits the mark of 6.4 billion authentications in the world in 2022
It doesn't even seem like more than three years ago the world knew the effects of COVID-19. At that moment when airports were closed, classrooms were emptied and the work that was done in the office started to be done from home, the number of accesses to eduroam inevitably decreased. Fortunately, post-pandemic, a positive contrast! Recently, eduroam hit the mark of 6.4 billion authentications registered. The 2022 figure represents a 70% increase over 2021.
eduroam is a global secure wireless access network (Wi-Fi) distributed worldwide, present in more than 100 countries, created to meet academic needs. It allows users of user education and research institutions to connect to the Internet in any campus, affiliated institution or even public environments such as libraries, coffee shops, airports, plazas, subway stations and shopping malls, using their home login credentials, without the need to set up a new Wi-Fi connection at each location visited.
Brazil continues to be the country with the largest eduroam network in the world, in number of access points. A total of 3,575 locations across the country have the academic Wi-Fi signal available to students, researchers and professors. In 2022, 31,761,992 authentications were computed in the country and 623,224 users were connected via the wireless network. In Brazil, eduroam is operated by the National Education and Research Network (RNP).
