Electronic medical records and data privacy in Health

- 04/09/2014

Information security applied to the Health was discussed in the morning of the last day of the RNP Forum. The importance of preserving the privacy of patient data and the use of electronic medical records were the key points of the lectures.

The Section head of the Center Hospital of Porto Alegre (Hospital das Clínicas de Porto Alegre - HCPA), Ana Endres, showed the institution actions on information security, with emphasis on the establishment of the Steering Committee of Systems Access. “It was created to ensure that each employee has an access profile suitable to the activity he performs, ensuring the privacy of patient information”, she reported.

She pointed out that the systems used in HCPA excel in profile control and safe navigation, which was reinforced by Carlos Eduardo Motta de Castro, who works in development, product, project and software factory management.

Castro showed the resolutions of the Federal Council of Medicine that encourage the use of electronic medical records and provide privacy for the patient’s electronic medical record, for the elimination of paper.

“Privacy in health is an essential point, we need to ensure the privacy of patient data at any cost. We also need to ensure applications with chronological entries, in order to make comparisons, separate responsibilities, and control access. We also have to think about the physical issues, when we talk about access control (BYOD). We can control the availability of medical records, but anyone can take a picture and leave with the data in their pocket. We must also pay attention to the media disposal, what we call the sanitization of media”, Castro said.

The representative of the Brazilian Society of Informatics in Health (Sociedade Brasileira de Informática em Saúde - SBIS), Luis Gustavo Kiatake, explained that, “for the elimination of the paper, the systems have to follow a set of requirements”. He spoke about the importance of institutions seeking quality stamps focusing on health information software. That is because “research shows that the healthcare market is more susceptible to issues of information security in the United States”, he warned.
