Ipê Network now integrates RNP's brands

Three years after applying for the registration of the Ipê network brand at the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI), RNP obtained the approval of the trademark. This is an important step, since the Ipê network is one of the main assets of the organization because it consists of the internet infrastructure offered by RNP throughout the country, connecting education and research institutions, university hospitals and cultural institutes. This infrastructure offers much more than connectivity to about 4 million students, professors and researchers in Brazil, being responsible for the development and offer of services to meet the needs of teaching, research, education and innovation.

The trademark registration process was initiated in 2015, when RNP filed the Ipê registration application as one of its brands. In July 2017, it was published in the Industrial Property Magazine (RPI), a media by which the INPI communicates its decisions, the rejection of the application for registration of the Ipê network brand, claiming the existence of a brand with similar name and classification. RNP then filed an appeal, which included a report explaining the aspects that differentiated the Ipê network from the existing brand and a letter written by the director general of RNP, Nelson Simões, explaining the importance of the Ipê network in Brazil and in the world.

Accepting the appeal filed, INPI, in September of this year, granted the trademark as property of RNP, which will soon receive the registration-granting certificate. "We had the concern to prepare a vast and consistent material of counter-argument, because INPI is very critical in this aspect. We are pleased to ensure the direct use of the Ipê network brand, which is one of the most important assets of RNP", concluded RNP's New Business analyst, Henrique Ferraz.

With this achievement, RNP has with the INPI the registration/deposit of 62 computer programs, 28 brands, three patent applications, an integrated circuit topography and 16 signed technology-licensing agreements.
