RNP delivers 20 Mbps circuit in the UFPA Cametá campus
The Cametá campus of the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) started to be served by a circuit of 20 Mbps that connects the city to the RNP’s Point of Presence in Belém, and consequently to the national academic network. The unit offers ten undergraduate courses and has four university centres in the cities of Baião, Limoeiro, Mocajuba and Oeiras do Pará.
The city of Cametá is 150 km away from Belém, and it is necessary to cross the river Tocantins to reach the place. Prior to the connection with RNP, the campus was served by an internet link of 6 Mbps, through radio and satellite connection.
According to Cametá campus IT technician, Edilson Prazeres Rodrigues, the bandwidth increase will greatly improve the user experience in Cametá, since the UFPA database is hosted in Belém, and all access to the university system goes through this connection.
One of the undergraduate courses offered by the academic unit is the Education of the Field, created by the Ministry of Education in 2013. The college coordinates research projects in areas such as forest recovery and family farming in the eastern Amazon, environmental management, agroecology in Baixo Tocantins and solidary economic projects in aquaculture and fishing, among others.
The Cametá unit also houses the Laboratory of the Territorial and Environmental Planning Program (PROOTMA), which integrates the results of researches developed in the campus, from several courses, for the construction of georeferenced database. The purpose is to create cartographic products on a local scale and socio-spatial indicators for the foundation of public policies of territorial and environmental planning in the Amazon region.
