School Connection Project surpasses the mark of 1,600 connected
Launched in March 2022, the Internet Connection to Schools project, financed by the Ministry of Communications (MCom), with the support of the Ministry of Education (MEC), and carried out by RNP, is close to completing a year with an important milestone to celebrate: more than 1,600 schools connected throughout the country.
The initiative has brought connectivity to 1,618 institutions to date, with a further 2,457 schools still in the process of being connected. Connections are being made by Internet service providers selected through two public calls made last year, whose installations are being authorized in batches approved by MCom.
Benefits are instantly realized by students, faculty and staff as soon as the cables are activated.
“The project is of great relevance for the development of activities carried out at the school. Internet access keeps us informed on a daily basis and has contributed to improving the work carried out with the students", says Maria Auxiliadora dos Santos Nogueira, director of the Santo Antônio do Cumaru Municipal Elementary School, in Bonito, Pará, the first to receive Internet, in July 2022.
Public policy for digital inclusion, the Connection to Schools will connect up to 8,000 units of the public education network, most of which are located in rural areas, potentially benefiting up to 800,000 students.
“As we are located in an area without mobile phone coverage, the Internet arrived at a great time and is working very well. We are also undergoing renovations and the Internet helps teachers in the daily production of their classes”, says the director of the Municipal Elementary School Gregório Rosa Filho, in Ananindeua, Pará, Maria do Remédio da Conceição Cardoso.
About the project
Internet Connection to Schools aims to find and implement Internet connectivity solutions, by identifying and contracting private providers (ISP – Internet Service Providers), for schools in the public network that do not have adequate connections.
