WRNP debates AI to identify hacker attacks and cyber threats
The 24th RNP Workshop (WRNP) will discuss the application of Artificial Intelligence for machine learning. Machine-learning (ML) allows developing algorithms for computers to be able to perform tasks without human interference and to identify patterns and inferences. The goal is to dispel myths, discuss facts and the future of AI/ML in networks. The 24th WRNP will take place on May 22nd and 23rd, in a hybrid format, with lectures, panels and face-to-face exhibitions in Brasília and free online transmission of the main programming.
The panel on Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in computer networks will take place on May 23, at 5:30 pm, in partnership with the Symposium of the Brazilian Computing Society (SBRC). The attraction will feature an international speaker: the North American Damla Turgut, president of Computer Science at the University of Central Florida and co-director of the AI Things laboratory at the university. Since 2019, Turgut has been co-chair of the board of N² Women, which brings together researchers from the fields of networks and communications.
To discuss the subject with the academic from Florida, WRNP invited Antonio Augusto de A. Rocha, from UFF (Fluminense Federal University) and member of the Blockchain Technical Committee (CT-Blockchain) and Network Monitoring Committee (CT-Mon) of RNP, and Bruno Ribeiro, from the Department of Computer Science at Purdue University, Indiana (USA). The panel will be conducted in English.
For Antonio Augusto, mediator at the table, AI can have several applications in network traffic, such as in identifying anomalies. “Artificial intelligence can help understand whether the anomaly comes from an infrastructure problem – such as a broken link or some equipment malfunction – or whether it is inappropriate user behavior, such as a hacker attack. This is the kind of potential that has been realized, including in projects promoted by RNP”, explains the UFF professor.
Regarding the limits of the use of AI, Antonio Augusto emphasizes the importance of the human intellect in the process. “Today, artificial intelligence supports operators in decision-making and planning, but AI still does not have a life of its own, as is often imagined. It does not make decisions alone, but supports decisions. Decision making can even be automated, but it will still need to be programmed by a human operator”.
Innovation and entrepreneurship
Focused on the most relevant trends in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the 24th RNP Workshop (WRNP) will also focus on themes related to entrepreneurship. The table “Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Startups” will address the technological challenges for creating value for the customer and the stages of the venture. The objective is to be able to discuss technology, the market, what companies can expect from academia and vice-versa. The panel will be on May 23, at 2 pm. Amanda Coutinho, head of Open Innovation and Corporate Venture Capital at ACE Cortex, and Altigran Soares, full professor at the Institute of Computing at the Federal University of Amazonas (IComp/UFAM) are invited to discuss the matter.
